The year in lady-news

31 Dec

Broadsheet is a must-read for me. If you’re at all interested in women, politics and culture, you should check out this kick-ass Salon blog.

Today, on the eve of a New Year, I want to pimp their post on the Year In Broadsheet. It’s a quick must-read and reminded me of all we survived this year. Some interesting tid-bits:

What a year in lady-news. We watched Hillary Clinton make her historic bid for the White House (and then witnessed her ripped apart by rabid male pundits, called the C-word in a million different ways and otherwise attacked with sexism of the “Iron my shirt!” variety). We all, even Middle America, fell head over heels in love with Michelle Obama and watched the meteoric rise of the ladies of the nightly news.

And then there was Sarah Palin. We’ve written enough about the woman to last a lifetime, so I’ll simply offer up some free association: rape kits, abortion, teen pregnancy, Trig, hockey moms, “Nailin’ Paylin,” Saks Fifth Avenue, the country of Africa and — yes, God, thank youTina Fey.

Happy New Year’s Eve all. I’ll be celebrating by not celebrating… that’s how I roll. But I hope you enjoy whatever you might have planned, and I’ll see you in ’09.

I found my missing diamond earring!!

30 Dec

Internets, I found my missing diamond earring.

What diamond earring? Oh, only one of the earrings from the pair of (beautiful) diamond earrings that my Aunt Marlene gifted me before she died. I told almost no one that one went missing (about two years ago) because I was so ashamed. SO ASHAMED. They were more than just diamond earrings, they meant something. They had history and sentimental significance. And I lost one.

But, fair Internets, all is well because yesterday, while cleaning my lovely, amazing, perfect studio… I found the missing earring. It was hiding under a lamp. (I know. I don’t get it either.)

The relief that swept over me was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. Who knew it was such a big burden on my shoulders. Perhaps now I’ll sleep at night?

seven readers on christmas day

29 Dec

I have off from my job until January 5 which is wonderful. I’m spending the majority of my time off at my mother’s house… a house that not only is without Internet access, but without computer.

I’ll let you digest that a moment.

Finished? Great. Let’s move on.

This explains why I haven’t blogged much over my holiday break, but I’m also wondering if this explains why only seven unique visitors – SEVEN – checked out my blog on Christmas Day. I don’t get mondo traffic, but I do get a decent amount for someone that writes in a schizophrenic way about her mostly-uneventful life and political views (with some pretty pictures thrown in to lessen the monotony).

But yeah – only seven people read it on Christmas Day. No big deal, but does this mean that most of my readers celebrate Christmas?

Or am I just bored and looking for something to analyse?

Discuss.

walk it out fosse

29 Dec

Oh thank GOD I figured out why I was digging Beyonce’s Single Ladies music video so much. I was beginning to think I, gulp, liked her. Thankfully, NOT THE CASE.

I was reading last week’s Entertainment Weekly (thanks DF for the subscription) and noticed that Single Ladies was one of the best performances of 2008. I tried to be appalled, but I totally agreed. Beyonce brought it, no question, to her SNL and American Music Awards performances, and suddenly that annoying song that I never listened to on the radio was downloaded from iTunes and part of my daily walk to work.

Can you imagine how I tormented myself, knowing of my secret Beyonce-song stash? I was mortified. MORTIFIED.

Anyway, back to Entertainment Weekly. In the column, they mentioned that it was an homage to Walk it out Fosse – a YouTube sensation. And suddenly, the clouds parted, the angels sang, and I felt whole again. I effing LOVE Bob Fosse – not shocking considering my background in dinner theater and All That Jazz love – and should have realized sooner that Beyonce’s choreography was an homage to Fosse. Take a look at the Single Ladies video:

Pretty fun to watch, no? Don’t act like you haven’t tried to act that dance out in the privacy of your own home. Okay, take a look at Walk it Out Fosse:

Star, star, star, love, love, love. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.

I don’t love Beyonce, as I’d feared. Instead, I am just loving Bob Fosse all over again.

The end.

No Park Cafe Tonight

28 Dec

Park Cafe, Lincoln Park, DC, originally uploaded by Dan_DC.

Strike one for the Chileans… We were supposed to go to dinner at Park Cafe tonight to celebrate SC’s birthday.

FACT: SC and Christ share a birth date, isn’t that precious?

I was pretty psyched about it for the following reasons:

  • I got to get out of Dodge (read: Baltimore) for a night.
  • I was going to sample the food of my mother country (Park Cafe is a Chilean restaurant).
  • I love Park Cafe and went quite a bit when I used to live on the Hill.
  • I love the Escudo Rojo wine the owner gave me a bottle of on my 25th birthday.
  • I love celebrating birthdays, especially those that aren’t mine.

But the Chileans had other plans in mind and KC saw this coming. She didn’t really believe we had a reservation in the first place, but the rest of us ignored her cautionary tale. Fast forward to about 20 minutes ago when KC called to inform me that a water pipe broke and we will not, in fact, be dining at the Park Cafe after all.

Worse, still? They only figured this out by driving by the restaurant and noticing the fact that it was totes closed.

KC and SC were not impressed, and called me to let me know – as their official Chilean representative.

(I’m realizing this story is pretty lame at this point. My apologies.)

Thankfully, we’re a resourceful bunch, so we’re headed instead to one of my local favorites: Marvin. I love the moules frites at Marvin, and hopefully SC will too.

The end.

Michelle Obama brings it back to the basics

23 Dec

My goodness do I love Michelle Obama… and Mrs. O- a frivolous yet lovely blog I found – does nothing to lessen my Michelle-love.

I think this was taken in June of 2007 in New Hampshire, and I think I was there. HOT!

I think this was taken in June of 2007 in New Hampshire, and I think I was there. HOT!

So when I received the email below from the Obama campaign, I was psyched to read that it wasn’t an appeal for money in exchange of a hat/mug/calendar (seriously?! SERIOUSLY?!), but instead an encouragement to contribute to causes:

Molly –

This holiday season, the grassroots movement you helped build can make a big difference for those in need.

I hope you will join me in supporting your favorite charity or contributing to causes that are especially meaningful to me and my family.

While many of us will spend the holidays counting our blessings and sharing dinner with loved ones, millions of people around the country won’t be so fortunate. Donating to your local food bank will help provide a holiday meal to people in your community who can’t afford one.

Talking with the families of deployed troops was one of the most rewarding experiences I had during the campaign. Giving to Operation USO Care Package is a great way to send members of our military stationed around the world a reminder that someone back home is thinking of them.

This is a time to celebrate our blessings, the new year, and a new era for our country. But it’s also a time to come together on behalf of those who need our help.

Do what you can to help today by locating your local food bank and giving your support:

Or send a care package to an American in uniform:

http://my.barackobama.com/carepackage

Thank you for all that you do and have a very happy holiday season,

Michelle

Okay, okay, I know she didn’t actually write it, or even have much to do with it, but I love that this email was sent under her name anyway. People, inside-the-beltway if nowhere else, are all a buzz trying to speculate on how Obama will use his record-breaking email list now that he’s in the Oval Office… and I have to say -  if all the email stay like this, then I’ll be a happy girl.

What causes are you supporting at the end of this year? I’m supporting Kiva, natch, but I’d love to hear where you donate/volunteer in the comments below.

the christmas spirit

fruit cake

1. Eggnog, 2. 23. Yoghurt and Candied Fruit Cake

It seems like many people are down on the holidays this year – many always are, and others are down this year for economic, military, and personal reasons.

Me? I’m just oooozing with Christmas cheer, but it’s not the same this year and I feel that too. I wish I could change it, but I’m not sure how. I do know what won’t help: eggnog and fruit cake.

First off, let me say… BLECH.

Second, I’d like to ask you, Internets, who actually drinks and eats these foods? I mean truly loves to drink/eat these things? Eggnog flavored coffee drinks mos def do not count.

I suppose I could concede that more people drink eggnog as opposed to eat fruit cake. But do they do so willingly, or are pretending to drink the ‘nog and chew the fruit cake just another thing people pretend to do out of Christmas tradition?

Discuss.

Happy Hannukah!

Who can eat for free at Ben’s Chili Bowl?

22 Dec

Let me spare you the suspense and let you know that it’s NOT me. But then, you probably never thought it was really a possibility.

Via DC de facto, I learned that U Street’s own Ben’s Chili Bowl has allowed for one more addition to their list of those that can eat for free… Can you venture a guess?

LOVES IT.

catching up with my google reader

21 Dec

Internets: Tonight is a big night.

Tonight I finally, FINALLY finished catching up on all the blog posts in my google reader that have been languishing since my Martha’s Vineyard vacation. SUCCESS!

So what if it only took me 2 weeks and a couple of days?

Now I have many more ideas about what to blog, how to blog, and what I want my blog to look like in 2009. It’s exciting.

Have you ever been particularly proud of yourself for accomplishing an inane, insignificant task? Excellent. Share it with me below, por favor.

(Yikes… did someone say 2009? Shhhhhh. I’m not ready for that just yet.)
